1925年、民衆の用いる日常品の美に着目した柳宗悦(18891961 )が、無名の職人たちによる民衆的工芸を初めて『民藝」と名づけました。民藝の特徴でもある風土や風習を生かしたものづくりは世代を超えて受け継がれ、革新的で衝動的な、枠に捉われない創意工夫へと発展しました。それは、使い手のみならず、ものづくりに携わるすべての人々に大きな衝撃を与え、新しいエネルギーを生み出すきっかけとなっています。本展では、日本民藝館館長でもある深澤直人が、同館の所蔵品を中心に新旧さまざまな100点余りの民藝を選び抜き、紹介します。映像や写真、資料などの多彩な展示を通して、これからのデザインのインスピレーションとなる”Another Kind of Art-民藝」を紐解いていきます。

In 1925, Soetsu Yanagi (1889-1961) first named handicrafts made byanonymous craftspeople “MINGEI,” as he recognized the beautyin these everyday items used by common people. The innocentaesthetics and spirit of MINGEI has a strong impact on not onlyusers, but also all people involved in making things, and providethem with triggers to create new energy. The exhibition will featureover 100 traditional and contemporary MINGEl items primarilyfrom the Japan Folk Crafts Museum’s collection selected by itsdirector Naoto Fukasawa. It will also highlight films, photographsand archives, and will unravel the story of “Another Kind of Art-MINGEI,” which will be the basis of design inspiration into the future.
